|Final Project Presentation
Society in general, and the economy in particular, are often driven by other goals than those they purport to help us achieve. The original thrust of this project was to provide a conscious examination of some of the taboos present in society today. If one considers a taboo to be something people refuse to acknowledge or even to consider, one would probably end up with quite a different list than what society itself holds as taboo. As a result, the very examination of taboo becomes taboo; and one is intrinsically drawn towards what society would not have us consider. These pictures aim to offer a basis for thinking about these notions on several levels: whilst one is drawn by the immediate taboo obviously available in the image, care was taken not to make it entirely absorbing, and one is hopefully also made aware of what motivates this taboo. At the same time, this could provoke thought on the nature of the pictorial format, it maleabilty, its role whithin society, or even the easiness with which its contents are absorbed.
Taboo Project Presentation
One of the recurring themes throughout history is the idea of the decadence of society, of the loss of moral standards. Whilst the very permanence of this concept discredits its reality, it is true that with the recent decrease in influence of the Catholic Church, and the end of what was termed “gentlemanly” capitalism, sexual imagery has gained prominence in society. The result of this increase has been the extension of what was considered taboo by Western society to new limits. The aim of this project is to explore these limits, and to find out how far acceptance of the moving of these limits can be pushed, particularly concerning sexual imagery.
What I hope to achieve with this project is not only the exploration of the limits of taboo in society, but also awareness in the viewer that this process of exploration is taking place. As such, I will need to maintain a careful balance between involving the viewer in the pictures, and allowing there to be sufficient distance between them to afford the viewer space to reflect on these images. Basically, the difficulty within this topic lies in the balance between the potential sensationalism of the subject, and the restraint required in the images to encourage critical thinking.
